Who is Phua Chu Kang?

Phua Chu Kang, played by Gurmit Singh, is the protagonist of Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd, a Singaporean Sitcom. Phua Chu Kang is known for his iconic appearance (yellow boots, curly afro, and large facial mole), his ahbeng (Chinese gangsters) mannerism as well as his catchphrases. He claims to be the best contractor "in Singapore, JB and some say Batam!" He’s the man who popularised “Don’t play-play” and "Use your brain" with the SARvivor rap back in 2003.

Gurmit Singh is a veteran actor who has been nominated for awards like Golden Horse Award and won prizes like Asian Television Awards prize. Today, he is still very relevant. Aside from being the Shopee Man in Shopee 11.11 & 12.12 advertisements, he is also the man who made the COVID-19 public service announcements palatable to the public with a rap on COVID-19 and a disco track on COVID-19 vaccination.

What is Gurmit Singh doing now?

About Gurmit Singh

Gurmit Singh is a veteran actor, comedian, host and writer. He made his TV debut in 1994 hosting a live show called Live on 5. His 20 years career includes hosting for the President’s Star Charity, The Singapore Idol, the yearly Countdown on Channel 5, The National Day Parade, and many other shows. His role as Phua Chu Kang in the self-named sitcom Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd enabled him to win Best Comedy Actor Award a total of 5 times, at the prestigious Asian Television Awards. Phua Chu Kang is now immortalised in the Madam Tussauds Museum.

Gurmit also has starred in several movies, one of which, Just Follow Law, won him a nomination for Best Actor Award at the acclaimed Golden Horse Award, Taiwan. In 2012, Gurmit was voted Top Ten trusted person in Singapore by voters of Readers’ Digest, in a list which included the Chief Justice, the Police Commissioner, and other illustrious leaders. He recently released his autobiography “What Was I Thinking” and is now no longer full-time with the TV station so he can spend more time with his family that has so gallantly supported his career of 20 years.
